Species Common Name: Hare's Foot Clover 

Species Botanical Name:  Trifolium arvense

Slender, branched, hairy, leguminous annual, found commonly in dry sandy places in lowland Britain, but not on calcareous soils. Very local in Northern Ireland.

Tolerance of cutting None, except end of season management

Edible / Medicinal: Very Medicinal.  Do not consume unless advised. 

 

Life Cycle (Form): Annual with Biennial tendency to flower after 12 months

Flower Height: 10 to 30 cm

Foliage Height: 5 - 10 cm

Flower Colour: White, Silver tinged with Violet, 

Flowering period:  July, 

Time to Flower: 6 - 14 months

Soil Type: Will grow in most soils, best in  dry, sandy soil.  

pH Type: Acid, Neutral, Alkaline.

Moisture: Dry, 

Aspect:  Full sun

Wildlife Value: Low,

Species Common Name: Harebell
Species Botanical Name: Campanula rotundifolia

harebell_03.png (43303 bytes) A great rockery plant and suitable for an alpine /Scree garden.  Best planted as plants, seeds are very difficult to germinate.

Harebell is a very long lived plant and can flower in lawns where no fertiliser or weed killer is used.

Harebell is found in the Burren and alone the west coast of Ireland.

Management:  Moderate persistence in alkaline shallow grassland.  Keep fertility poor, keep the grass, cut and do not allow a thatch to build-up.
Tolerance of cutting Good.
Cutting time: Spring

Edible / Medicinal:

A typical Galway / Clare Alkaline Meadow.

To date we only produce a small quantity of seed for sale and its difficult to germinate, but we have from time to time, some plants for sale. Grow it as a prized flower until the clump is large enough to divide

Foliage Height: 5 - 10 cm

Flower Colour: Blue,

Flowering period: July, August, September.

Time to Flower: 24 months

Soil Type: Will grow in most soils,

pH Type: Neutral, Alkaline.

Moisture: Dry, Moist, 

Aspect:  Full sun

Wildlife Value: Medium, Attracts Butterflies, Hoverflies & Bees.
