Design By Nature - Native Conservation Grade
Wildflower Seed Producer:
DBN (Ire) are Wildflower Growers who produce
only native Irish wildflowers in Ireland collected from native Irish species.
Where a species is extinct we may re-introduce from the most appropriate
British native source. Where a crop fails, we may substitute a species with
non native, usually E.U. Forbe forms approved for use as breed/improved from
native European (esp Western British) wild flower.
International Verbal Agreement:
There is an international (mainly UK) verbal agreement between many wildflower growers and users that only native seed should be used for conservation projects and large projects such as roadside and golf course
planting. We all agree that non native seed should only be used in Gardens.
see Why we should grow Native Seed. Dr. Steve Waldron Trinity College Botanic Garden.
Native seed is seed that is grown from plants collected in the wild.
Commercial seed is grown from the same source year after year without returning to the wild to renew stocks.
(The 1987 ref on this web, as to why use native species, has been updated and
the entire artical has been moved, toallow more space, search or see the
header/footer and side bar links on the new web.)
It is accepted that small packets of seed provided they are Phytosanitary inspected (pest and diseases) are suitable for sowing in the garden of any country in the world where the seed is allowed entry through the
appropriate Department of Agriculture. Hence Design By Nature will not export out of Ireland, large quantities of bulk seed intended for sowing by the landscape industry. We do export small packets of seed for garden
use.
